Course Description/Rationale:
The purpose of this course will be to provide preservice and inservice teachers with information and skills relative to teaching about and using communication systems. The course will introduce a wide variety of multimedia tools and allow teachers to select several skills to purse in more depth. The tools are constantly changing but some of the areas included are text, graphics, animation, presentation, audio, video, and multimedia authoring.

Relationship to Other Courses:
This course differs from similar courses in that this course will deal specifically with multimedia tools and their usage in mathematics, science and technology education. Understanding the underlying technology is an important component. The curriculum of this course focuses on the goals set forth by the Council of Technology Teacher Educators through NCATE, the Standards for Technological Literacy adopted by the International Technology Education Association, and the Ohio Technology Academic Content Standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions

Each student should be able to:

  1. Describe media available to educators and the pros and cons of each media type in educational settings.
  2. Evaluate a multimedia program.
  3. Convert messages from analog media to digital media and vice versa.
  4. Produce messages in the following media; audio, video, animation, graphics, and text.
  5. Choose and combine appropriate media to convey messages teaching about technology.
  6. Produce an interactive message using a combination of media.
  7. Store messages produced on audio and video tape, a web server, DVD, and a CD.
  8. Effectively locate resources on the WWW.
  9. Participate in Internet based discussions.

Off Campus Field Experiences:
Although this course will not have specific off-campus field experience as an assignment, it is expected that teachers will share how they are using multimedia in their work.

Diversity:
Inherent in the content of the course is the need to address instruction for all students. Assignments will focus on communicating messages to all students and their diverse needs.

Technology:
As a part of their experiences in this class, students will be required to use a variety of multimedia technologies.

Student's Goals:
You should have in mind applications of multimedia that you would like to pursue from either the perspective of teaching the application to your students or using the application to improve your instruction, or both.
