Course Description

A study of historical and contemporary design technology as it is applied in the construction and manufacturing industries.

General Objectives

Required Text
  • Todd, R. D., Todd, K. R., & McCrory, D. L. (1996). Introduction to design and technology. Cincinnati: Thomson Learning Tools.
  • Assignments

    Design Assignments

Redesign of an Existing Product. The instructor must approve your choice of products. This will be an individual assignment. Drawings or pictures of the existing product must be included with your redesigned thumbnail sketches and finished drawings.

Design a New Logo. This logo will be for the product you previously redesigned. It should be done in at least three colors.

Design Project. The instructor must approve your choice of products. This will be an individual or group (no larger than three people) assignment. You will follow the entire design process to design an inventive or innovative product. The entire process must be documented in a portfolio and in a presentation to the class.

  • Quizzes. There will be four quizzes during the quarter. They will cover the reading assignments from the text and the extra readings presented by the class. They are available at the appropriate time at http://courses.telr.ohio-state.edu.

Paper & Presentation. A typed (word-processed) final paper and oral presentation on the development of an existing product. The paper should be 4-6 pages in length, double-spaced, 12-point type, written in APA-style, and have at least 3 references. It should cover when and why the product was developed, who designed it, how the product became what it is today, and problems that were encountered in the development (if any). The presentation should be 4-6 minutes in length and it will be evaluated. They will not be returned, so make a copy for your records.

Daily Clean-up. This will be a very easy way to accumulate points toward your grade. We will stop early and sweep and clean-up our area on a daily basis. 2 1/2 points will be given for each day’s clean-up. You must be present to earn these points. (20 classes x 2.5 points = 50 points)

Final Clean-up. This clean-up will occur during the last day’s class session. You must participate in this final lab clean-up. It is worth 50 points toward your final grade!

    Attendance
Attendance is required for all classes. We only have the opportunity to meet 20 times this quarter so there will be no UN-EXCUSED absences. We will be working on group assignments for the major part of the grade, and you will only hurt your group if you are absent. If situations arise that will not allow you to be here, you must notify the office that you will not be attending class. I will have a daily attendance sheet for you to sign by the second week of the quarter. The last three meetings for the class must be attended! These classes will be for the presentation of the group projects, presentations of the final papers, and laboratory clean-up.

    Academic Misconduct

    • Faculty Rules 3335-5-54, which states, "Each instructor shall report to the Committee on Academic Misconduct all instances of what they believe may be academic misconduct" will be followed.

    • Academic misconduct includes substituting another person’s work as your own, either in written or product form.

    • If you have any questions regarding a behavior that might constitute academic misconduct consult your instructor.
